Most video game players know Rockstar Games for their open world criminal drama Grand Theft Auto. But it’s another big franchise that is leaving Twitter users in a frenzy.
It started Sunday, when Rockstar tweeted out its logo in bright red. Then on Monday, the game studio tweeted out an image appearing to hint at its Western series Red Dead.
The series involves two titles: Red Dead Revolver and the critically-acclaimed follow-up Red Dead Redemption, which launched in 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s the latter game generating the most buzz, as many critics proclaimed the title its best video game that year.
As expected, Twitter users are losing their minds, based on replies to Rockstar’s latest tweet:
Redemption is a Western epic starring John Marston, who must help federal agents track members of his former gang in exchange for the release of his wife and son. Players were able to travel through deserts, snowy mountains and other landscapes all while tackling countless missions such as helping local sheriffs or hunting and skinning animals.
Many critics named Red Dead Redemption its best game in 2010, an impressive feat when you consider that was a strong year for video game releases, including Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops and God of War III.
The big question is whether it’s a new Red Dead game or possibly a remastered version of Red Dead Redemption. Considering it’s been nearly seven years since Redemption launched, not to mention we haven’t seen a new game from Rockstar in three years, this appears to be a great time for a new game.
Meanwhile, shares of Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of Rockstar’s games, are up 6.5%
